Acie William “Bill” Shaffer of Lynn, Indiana passed away peacefully at Reid Health, Sunday, June 10, 2018. Bill was born in Bristol, Virginia to Glen Meirs and Julia Carter Shaffer on November 18, 1923.
Bill served in the U.S. Army April 2, 1943 and was honorably discharged April 21, 1947 due to injuries received in combat. This is an excerpt from Bill’s 50th Army Anniversary Reunion in 1993: His activation year was March 1943 at Camp Davis, North Carolina. You made the History that surrounds the world events on this date. You served with three armies, four infantry divisions, and protected the Radio Free Luzenbourg along with other menial duties in Europe from July 1944 to December 1945. You have earned every medal except the Congressional Medal of Honor. You proudly carry four (4) Major Combat Stars, every one with your Blood and Honor. God Bless You.
Bill worked hard all his life. He enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family. He is survived by his sons, Steve, and Scott; daughters, Sherri (Rick Napier) Shaffer, Terri (Gene) Davis, Julie (Bill) Shaffer-Smith, and Jackie (Randy) Retter; step children, Eddie (Sallie) Light, and Jo Rita McMurray and brother Alfred Shaffer, 8 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren, Along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Lois, and son Bill Shaffer; brothers, Ray, Woodrow, Frank, and Jack Shaffer; sisters, Edna, Blanche and Ola.
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Home. Burial will be at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens with military honors. Friends may call 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Monday at the funeral home.
