Albert Carl Hylton, 86, of Connersville, passed away early Friday morning, May 4, 2018, at Heritage House of Connersville.
One of four children of Arthur and Lillian Lane Hylton, Carl was born on April 27, 1932, in Milton, Indiana. He graduated from Fountain City High School and in 1955 attained his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from Purdue University. While attending Purdue University, Carl enlisted in ROTC and obtained the rank of Captain. Following graduation, he served his country in the United States Army, and after receiving his honorable discharge, he became a reserve officer at the Connersville Post of the United States Army Reserve.
On June 19, 1955, Carl married the former Wanda Coleen Howell of Centerville, Indiana. Mrs. Hylton passed away on November 29, 2011.
A lifelong educator, Carl taught Agriculture at Milton High School, Greenfield High School, and Hagerstown High School. He attained his master’s degree from Ball State University and worked in Administration at Union High School in Modoc, Indiana and Randolph South High School. In 1971, he came to Connersville as Assistant Principal at Connersville High School and became Principal in 1973. Carl then took on the role of Principal at Union County Middle School in 1981.
Carl was a Purdue Extension Ag Agent for over ten years, serving in both Fayette and Rush Counties. Following his retirement, he continued his dedication to education as a substitute teacher in Fayette and Franklin Counties.
Carl was a dedicated member of Connersville Baptist Temple, and he served four terms on the Fayette County School Board where he held the position of President. He served as Past President of Connersville Rotary and Optimist Club, instituted the Fraternal Order of Elks Student of the Month, and was a member of the Connersville Lions Club. Carl served on the Fayette County Area Planning Board was instrumental in the development of the Fayette County Senior Citizen Board. He was very involved with the local 4-H Club where he served as a leader and was a judge at numerous county fairs across the state. For his everlasting dedication to his community, Carl was honored to be named Citizen of the Year by the Connersville Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include a daughter, Beth Hylton Denham and her husband, Wayne of Connersville; a son, Brent Hylton and his wife, Lisa of Zanesville, Ohio; grandchildren, Travis Denham of Indianapolis; Tara Denham Roberts and her husband, Jordan of Connersville, Amanda Schneider and her husband, Eric of Cincinnati, Ohio, Allison Hylton of Zanesville, Ohio; great-grandchildren, Carson, Colton, and Andi Roberts; a sister-in-law, Betty Hylton of Indianapolis; a brother-in-law, Jim Howell and his wife, Marge of Centerville, Indiana; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Besides his wife of 56 years, Wanda C. Hylton, Carl was preceded in death by two brothers, Joe Hylton and Art Hylton; a sister, Jesse Brown.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 9, 2018, at Miller, Moster, Robbins Funeral Home. Carl’s nephew, Pastor John Hylton, will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery, Centerville, Indiana. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8, 2018.
