Carl Dwight Henderson Jr., 88, passed away Tuesday morning August 7, 2018 at Reid Health in Richmond, Indiana. Carl was born on July 3, 1930 in Baltimore, Maryland to the late Carl and Nannie (Dressler) Henderson of Covington, Virginia. He moved to the Cambridge City area in his early childhood and graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 1949 where he played varsity basketball and track. Carl was drafted into the United States Army on August 20, 1951 and served as part of the military police. He was honorably discharged on August 20, 1953. Carl married the former Margery Drennen of Bentonville on January 20, 1955 in Shelbyville, Indiana. Following their marriage, Carl and Margery lived north of Cambridge City while Carl worked briefly at Chrysler Corp. in New Castle. Carl began farming during layoff periods at the factory, which became his passion for the next 61 years. He has lived on his farm in rural Centerville for the past 55 years. He was a member of the Lawrence H. Bertsch American Legion Post 169 in Cambridge City. Carl enjoyed weekly visits of good friends and spending time with family, teaching the grandchildren about the benefits of hard work and dedication.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Margery; 6 children, David (Linda) Henderson, Nancy (Farrell) Keith, Danny (Teresa) Henderson all of Connersville, Rodney (Loretta) Henderson of Glenwood, Kathy (Tom) Willhelm of Straughn and Debbie (Bret) Lucas of Centerville; 20 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; 1 sister, Reola (Richard) Drennen of Cambridge City.
Carl was preceded in death by 1 brother, Leo Henderson; son, Darrell Henderson, grandson, Kyle Henderson and great grandson, Wyatt Henderson.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday August 14, 2018 at Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, Dublin. Pastor Bud Parrish of Abington Christian Church will officiate. Burial with military honors conducted by contingents of the United States Army Honor Guard and Post 169 will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Cambridge City. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. on Monday August 13th.
