Organizations planning late July fireworks
Centerville officials announced they’re gathering information about potential costs for a splash pad, approved a late July fireworks display and urged residents to cut down their electricity use during peak hours and check their smoke detector batteries.

During their June 28 meeting, Councilman Jack Bodiker said he’s helping look into the installation and ongoing maintenance costs for a splash pad to entertain local families starting next year.
He’s also talking with health department officials to gather information and then share those details with his fellow council members, town department heads and residents.
Bodiker said once the costs are available, residents likely would be surveyed to gauge their interest before council makes a decision.

run approved
All five members voted to approve community requests for three events in July.
John Michael, representing Voice of the Patriots, received permission for a professional fireworks display after 9 p.m. July 23. Locally based Scarrette Pyrotechnics will provide the 12- to 15-minute show after the Summer Freedom Rally taking place at Cornerstone Family Market on U.S. 40 on Centerville’s eastern edge, from 6-9 p.m.
Council also granted permission for the annual Bulldog 5K run/walk to start at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 30. It will be in memory of Joe Lake. The group will gather at the high school parking lot and then go down Willow Grove, McMinn, School, Mulberry, Elm and South streets before finishing at the school.
Those present at the meeting observed a moment of silence in Lake’s memory. Lake, 57, died in June 2021 after a battle with melanoma. He won numerous awards and set records for long-distance running in cross country and track while at Centerville Senior High School. Before retiring because of health, he led human resources globally for the Valvoline division of Ashland Inc.
And, council approved a fundraiser for Archway Days on July 9 at Maplewood Park. An animated movie called “The Bad Guys” based on a children’s book will be shown, and organizers say they hope to offer three movie nights next year if this screening goes well. Council approved closing the road between Morton and First to control parking, an hour before the screening. Archway Days takes place Aug. 26-27.
Police Chief Ed Buchholz also noted that police have been working with CSHS’ band program on traffic and other matters as they prepare for hosting the Archway Classic marching band contest on July 16.
