Charles Norman Wiley was born on November 22, 1931 to Charles Edwin and Olive Gloyd Wiley in Rush County, Indiana.
He died on November 15, 2019.
He graduated from Harrisburg High School in 1950 and went to work for American Kitchens and later for Allison’s Manufacturing in Indianapolis. He joined the Air Force in 1951 and while on leave in May of 1952 married his high school sweetheart, Patricia McFee. Patty joined him in Ipswich, England where he served during the Korean War. He obtained the rank of Staff Sargent and was honorably discharged from the service in 1955.
He started farming in the Bentonville area in 1956 and moved to the Harrisburg area in 1958 where he continued his life-long passion for farming.
He was a member of the American Legion and the Fayette County Farm Bureau. Norman drove a bus for Fayette County Schools for 17 years and was a rural mail carrier for 26 years. He was a fan of the Cincinnati Reds, the Indianapolis Colts, and college basketball. He enjoyed helping his kids with their 4-H projects. Above all, Norm and Pat stressed education and hard work and assisted their children through college.
Norman is survived by his wife of 67 years, Patricia (Patty) Wiley along with his six children, Gary Wiley, Debbie Wilson Ed.D. (Tom), Mindy Stroup Ed.D. (Jack), Lynn Schaffer (Tom), Jenny McLeer (Joe), and Glenn Wiley (Beth). Norman is survived by 13 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren that loved coming to the farm. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents Olive and Charles Wiley, a grandson, Andrew Wiley, his brothers, Walter Smaltz, Leonard (Shorty) Smaltz, Russell Wiley, Jim Wiley, and his sister Mildred Siefert.
Visitation for family and friends will be on November 20, 2019 from 4pm to 7pm at the Urban Winkler Funeral Home.
Services for Norman will be held on November 21, 2019 at 10am at the Urban Winkler Funeral Home with the Reverend Robert Siefert (nephew) officiating. Burial with graveside military honors presented by the Fayette County Honor Guard will follow at Dale Cemetery.
