Darrel E. Alvey, 85, of Richmond went to be with the Lord on Thursday June 3, 2021. He was born on December 9, 1935, in Fountain City, Indiana to Roy and Thelma (Kuhlman) Alvey. Darrel graduated from Richmond High School in 1954 and went on to Butler University to play basketball. He left Butler to pursue a professional baseball career with the Baltimore Orioles organization which was cut short after suffering a shoulder injury at the AAA level. Following his return to Richmond, he was invited to join the U.S. Army and loved the time he served in Alaska. Shortly after his discharge from the Army he began his long career at Richmond Power & Light retiring in 1997 as a foreman working with the substations and labor groups. During the 1960s and 1970s he was well known for his work with the Optimist Baseball leagues and teaching Richmond’s up and coming youth baseball players. He was a member of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish – St. Mary Catholic Church.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Dana; children Kelly (Amy) Alvey of Virginia Beach, Jack (Lisa) Alvey of Noblesville, and Brady Alvey of Richmond; 7 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Roy and Thelma; siblings Marjorie Juerling, Richard Alvey, Shirley Shepherd and Sandy Grillo.

Visitation for Darrel will be held from 10:30 AM -11:00 AM on Tuesday June 8th at St Mary Catholic Church. A mass will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church immediately following the visitation with entombment in Earlham Mausoleum directly after. Riggle-Waltermann Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
