Donald M. Culbertson, 85, of Carrizozo, New Mexico passed away January 25, 2018 in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He was born September, 20, 1932 in Webster, Indiana, to Noel Borton Culbertson and Mabel Gibson Culbertson.
Donald graduated from Milton High School, Milton, Indiana and University of Dayton, Dayton, Ohio. On March 11, 1951 he married Barbara Helmsing and shortly thereafter served in the U.S. Air Force before beginning his career in accounting and finance. Donald was an accountant for the automotive manufacturer Perfect Circle in Hagerstown, Indiana for many years before joining National Industries in Louisville, Kentucky. He retired as Vice-President of Administration from Fuqua Industries, Atlanta, Georgia, before moving to New Mexico with his family in 2000.
Donald is survived by his wife of nearly 67 years, Barbara Culbertson of Carrizozo, a brother, Eugene Culbertson of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, a daughter Cynthia Culbertson, son-in-law Richard T. Bryant, and grandson Tyler Shropshire. He was preceded in death by his parents Noel and Mabel Culbertson, sisters Ruth Hamilton, Josephine Marlatt and Helen Senefeld, and a brother, Kenneth Culbertson.
Donald grew up on the family farm in Indiana, played on his high school basketball team and remained an avid college basketball fan throughout his life. He loved the outdoors and the natural world and was a lifelong horseman. Donald had a particular affinity for children and animals and was greatly beloved as a favorite uncle by his numerous nieces and nephews.
Donald was a member of the Rotary Club as well as the United Methodist Church, Capitan, New Mexico.
The family will hold a gathering in his remembrance at a later date, however, memorial donations in his honor may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Humane Society of Lincoln County, New Mexico.
