Donald P. Sturgeon, 70, of Hagerstown, died Friday, April 1, 2022, at Reid Health in Richmond.
He was born in Indianapolis on July 28, 1951 to James H. and Dorothy (Davis) Sturgeon. They moved to Hope, IN in 1952.
He was a 1969 graduate of Houser High School. He attended Vincennes University and transferred to Purdue University, where he received a BS in Agricultural Education in 1973 and Masters in 1974. He earned an endorsed in Science Education at Ball State University in 1990.
Don began his teaching career in 1974 at Nettle Creek Schools. He also taught at Tri Central in Sharpsville from 1980 to 1984. Don returned to Hagerstown where he completed 40 years of teaching agricultural education.
Following his retirement, he taught at Ivy Tech in Richmond and drove the athletic bus for I.U. East. He was currently driving a bus for Nettle Creek Schools.
Don was active in many community and agricultural organizations. His greatest pleasure was seeing his students become active and productive members of their communities.
He was a member and Past Master of Hagerstown Lodge #49 F&AM where he was currently serving as Lodge Secretary. In 2008, he was recipient of the Good Neighbor and Friend Award. He was also a member of Hagerstown First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Jane Sturgeon; 3 children, Daniel Sturgeon of Hagerstown, James Sturgeon (Amanda) of Conway, SC and Leslie Moore (Peter) of Carmel; 5 grandchildren; his mother, Dorothy Sturgeon, of Greenwood, a brother, David Sturgeon (Cindy) of Indianapolis; 2 sisters in law, Nancy Upchurch and Barb Allen Turner (Brian), both of Richmond; several nieces and nephews.
His father, James H. Sturgeon, preceded him in death.
Private services will be at the convenience of the family, with a Masonic Memorial Service prior to services. A public celebration of Don’s life will be announced in the near future.
