Doris J. McCreary, 85, of Connersville, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday morning, July 9, 2019, at Caroleton Manor where she had been a resident for the past nine years.
One of six children of Jarve and Vetrola (Miller) Howard, Doris was born on May 22, 1934, in East Bernstadt, Laurel County, Kentucky.
On March 7, 1953, Doris was married in Jonesville, Virginia, to James Charles McCreary and they came to Connersville for residence at that time. Mr. McCreary passed away on September 29, 1979.
Along with her husband, Doris owned and operated McCreary Grocery Store at 416 Western Avenue from 1963 until 1977. She also was employed for and was the local manager for Witt Monuments in Connersville for several years.
Doris had attended Calvary Baptist Church. Having a love for the Lord and a servants heart, she brought encouragement to her church family by sending cards and bringing food to lift their spirits. In her leisure time, she enjoyed ceramics, crocheting, reading, working on her beautiful flowers, playing cards, and spending time with her family.
Survivors include a daughter, Patty Sue (Gary) Ash of Cambridge City, five grandchildren, John Richardson of Indianapolis, Michael (Shannon) McCreary of Connersville, Gabriel McCreary of Connersville, Jeremy Ash of Brownsburg, and Kailey (Jon) Winchester of Cambridge City; six great-grandchildren, Elaina, Jacob, Alexis, and Allison McCreary, Jathan and Knox Winchester; daughter-in-law, Deborah McCreary of Cleves, Ohio; a sister, Judy Merz of Connersville; a brother, Frank (Bonnie) Howard of Wallins, Kentucky; a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Besides her husband of 26 years, James C. McCreary, Doris was preceded in death by her parents; a son, James Rick McCreary who passed away on July 8, 2016; two brothers, Bob and Bill Howard; and a sister, Mary Ann Dykes.
Funeral services will be conducted by Doris’ brother, Reverend Frank Howard, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 13, 2019, at Miller, Moster, Robbins Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Laurel North Cemetery. Friends may call from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 12, 2019, at the funeral home.
