Douglas Earl Wood, 76, of Richmond, Indiana passed away on Sunday November 10th, 2019 at his home surrounded by his wife and children on the annual birth date of the Marine Corps. “He was a legend in his own right, he was a true Marine – he embodied all the characteristics of a true Marine; loyalty, strength, dependability, integrity, unselfishness, honor, courage, commitment and knowledge. These tenants he displayed throughout his life as a father, husband, brother, and friend” – Semper Fidelis

Doug was born May 15, 1943 in Richmond, Indiana to Father-Fay Wood and Mother-Cecil Street. He graduated from Richmond High school. He enlisted in the Military and served in the Marine Corps in 1963 serving two tours in Vietnam until 1967. He received several military honors/medals – Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Vietnamese Service Medal; Good Conduct Medal; and the National Defense Service Medal. His Military Specialty Title was, Mortar Man and related civilian occupation, Proof Director, Small Arms (firearms). His many achievements include being a Golden Gloves Boxer, a Far-Eastern wrestling champion and a Best Custom Knife Cincinnati Show winner (1986).

He worked as a machinist/tool & die maker at Alcoa and later Silgan Containers having a total of 40+ yrs. He was a proud union member and Democrat. His hobbies included collecting antiques, finding Knick knacks, Knife-making-cutlery, wrestling, Baseball, collecting western/American Indian Art, Collie Dogs, singing Karaoke, watching old western movies and spending time with his family.

He leaves behind his wife Arnita Wood, his 9 children, 6 siblings, 20 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. His children include: Shannon Howe (2ch); Darby Wood (2ch) Brandy Wood-Iler (1ch); Michael Dunbar (2ch); Melissa Dunbar (4ch); Carmine Dunbar (3ch); Kily Wood (3ch); Joshua Wood; Annie-Laurie Wood-Slater (4ch). His 20 grandchildren. Garon Howe; Lindsay Howe; Mathew Wood; Lorinda Wood; Dustin Bennett; Danielle Penn; Derek Stevenson; Adreanna Frame; Allie Thomas; Rachael Dunbar; Luke Dunbar; Elijah Hill; Jacob Hill; Kyleeanne Wood; Konner Wood; Karlee Wood; Hylee Slater; Cree Slater; Kaurra Slater; Cole Slater. 5 great-grandchildren; Kiley Howe; Dylan Bennett; Scarlett Frame; Evalene Cox; Ruby-Clover Hill. His siblings include: brother, Kenneth Street; sister, Phyllis Thomas; sister, Beverly Lahrman; sister, Debra Bertrand; sister, Brenda Eadler and brother, Dale Wood.

He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings and grandchild; Father-Fay Wood, Mother-Cecil Street, Sister-Carol Thomas; Brother-Timothy Wood; Sister-Sharon Ann Wood, granddaughter-Kayleigh Hill.

The service will be Thursday November 21, 2019 at the USW Union-Hall 61 Waterfall Rd. Richmond, IN. The Military honors service will begin at 12:00 p.m. and the celebration of life, will proceed until 6:00p.m. Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
