Herbert “Tom” Thomas Caldwell, age 89, of New Castle, passed away Monday, June 20, 2022, at his residence. He was born October 29, 1932, in Owingsville, Kentucky, a son of the late Elmer Dolphus and Lillie (Purvis) Caldwell.
Tom was a U.S. Army veteran where he served as Paratrooper SFC in the Korean War from 1951 until 1954. He worked as Superintendent for Public Service of Indiana for 32 years before retiring in 1990. During that time, he taught several training classes for Public Service at Purdue University including calculus, geometry, and electronics. Tom was a jokester and loved to play practical jokes on people. He enjoyed golf and was an avid runner, running in several marathons taking great pride in his physical fitness. Tom was a member of the Lion’s Club.
Left to cherish his loving memory include his wife, Joanne (Smith) Caldwell, whom he married February 9, 1985; two daughters, Brenda (Steve) Nichols and Vicki Alsip; grandchildren, Taylor (Roman) Flores, Tanner Alsip, Chessea, Isabel, and Casey Nichols; three step-children, Trea Hampton, Laura (Dennis) Kleinman, Samantha (Shawn) Worley; step-grandchildren, Nichole and Kelly Hampton, Cassie and Kimberly Kleinman, Amanda, Ashley, and Heather Worley; 15 great-grandchildren; one brother, Jim (Janey) Caldwell; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 1, 2022, at Rose City Funeral Home, 2011 East Broad St., New Castle, In. Burial will follow at South Mound Cemetery.
