Irene L. (Guffey) Caton Black, age 91 and the matriarch of our family, passed away Wednesday, November 18, 2020 at Glen Oaks Health Campus in New Castle, Indiana. She was born October 21, 1929 in Powersburg, Kentucky, the daughter of Dalton L. and Maude E. (Neal) Guffey.
She was a lifetime member of VFW #1282 Auxiliary, a Golden Eagle with the Eagles Lodge and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. During her lifetime, she worked at Firestone in the 50’s, the Courier Times Newspaper as a rural carrier for 13 years, in clothing at New Castle State Hospital and in housekeeping at New Castle Chrysler High School. Her final job was thru Green Thumb at Westminster Community Center, for which she was extremely proud of. She had a green thumb and could grow anything. Irene was a social bee, while being known for her love of animals and growing flowers. Anyone close to her spent many hours on her back-porch swing talking the day away.
Survivors include her three children, Willard-Sonny (Judy) Catron, Billy (Samilla) Catron, and Angela (Shannon) Catron of New Castle; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Margie Smith, Ina (Russell) Phillips, Bobby (Celia) Guffey and Herlan-Junior (Rose) Guffey of Monticello, Kentucky. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Thelma J. (Catron) Franks; a great-grandson, Zackary T. Neal; her 1st. husband, Willard Catron; 2nd husband, Curtis Black; siblings, Luther Guffey, Ruby Lois Williams, Leonard Guffy, Hattie-Sis Godsey, Kenneth Guffey, Johnnie Guffey, and Russell Dean Guffey.
The family would like to thank all the staff at Glen Oaks Health Campus for treating our mother and us like family and for providing care for our mother in the last days of her life, as well as Henry County Memorial Hospice.
