Obituaries - Joseph Gordin Phillips

CENTERVILLE, Ind. – Joseph Gordin Phillips, age 87, of Centerville, Indiana, passed away peacefully Thursday, August 17, 2017, at Heritage House of Richmond.

Born March 21, 1930, in Brownsville, Indiana, to Benjamin and Emma Locke Phillips,
Joseph lived most of his life in Centerville. He was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army, serving in the occupying forces in Germany. Joseph retired from NATCO and farmed cattle with his nephew, John Scott. He had been a member of Centerville Christian Church for over 60 years and attended First Baptist Church of Centerville. Joseph enjoyed gardening and farming and loved spending time with his family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his church.

Survivors include his daughters, Cheryl Lewis of Indianapolis, Indiana, and JoAnne Phillips of Centerville, Indiana; grandchildren, Shawn Hannon, Carey (Ataur) Rahman, Teresa Lewis, Rachel Lewis, James Hill, Jeff (Britnegh) Hill, and Heather (Dustin) Austerman; many great-grandchildren; brothers, Jim (Sandy) Phillips and Alvie (Janice) Phillips; nieces; nephews; cousins; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Betty Bernice McNew Phillips; grandson, Buddy Joseph Hill; parents; three sisters; and four brothers.

Visitation for Joseph Gordin Phillips will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 22, 2017, at Mills Funeral Home, 405 East Main, Centerville. Funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 22, 2017, at Mills Funeral Home with Rev. James Girdley and Pastor Terry Cochran officiating. Burial will be in Earlham Cemetery with military honors provided by the Wayne County Honor Guard.
