Obituaries - Joy B. Gay

CENTERVILLE, Ind. – Joy B. Gay, age 85, of Centerville, Indiana, died Wednesday, July 26, 2017, at Reid Health.

Born February 17, 1932, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Wilbur R. and Bessie Hitch Benjamin, Joy moved to Wayne County when she was six months old.

She graduated from Richmond High School in 1950. Joy was involved in Historic Centerville and supported the Doddridge Chapel Cemetery Association. She was a former Girl Scout leader, active in the Wayne County Cattlemen’s Club, and a former member of Psi Iota Xi Sorority and the Opportunity Extension Homemakers Club. Joy loved antiques and auctions, was a wonderful cook and was well known for her cookies and pies, and had a green thumb.

Survivors include her husband of 66 years, James Gay of Centerville; daughters, Andrea Sue (David) Angi of Centerville, Indiana, Robyn Jan Hahn of No Name, Colorado, and Nancee (Rick) Whitt of Chattanooga, Tennessee; son, Thomas Gay of Richmond; two grandchildren, Peter (Colleen) Angi and Stephanie (Kevin) McCurdy; five great-grandchildren, James and Morgan McCurdy, Kate Wilson, and Camille and Madeline Angi; brother, Jules Benjamin of La Porte, Indiana; nieces; nephews; and many friends, including special family friend, Jerry Winters of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Bessie Schnelle; father, Wilbur Benjamin; sisters, Virginia Roller and Beulah Benjamin; and brothers, Wilbur Benjamin and Jimmy Benjamin.
Memorial visitation for Joy B. Gay will be from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 2, 2017, at Doddridge Chapel, 9471 Chapel Road, Centerville. Memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 2, 2017, at Doddridge Chapel with Rick Whitt officiating.
