Kermit Boyd Thomas, 79, died peacefully at his home, near Hagerstown, on September 1, 2017.

He was born in Fortville on May 26, 1938 to John Jackson and Elsa (Rafert) Thomas. He was a graduate of Bedford High School, and received BS and MS degrees from Indiana University. He was Elementary Art teacher at Nettle Creek Schools from 1963 until his retirement in 1999.

He was a member of Hagerstown First United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir for 45 years. He was also a member of Historic Hagerstown, the Hymn Society of the United States and Canada, the Indiana Retired Teacher’s Association and The Reed and Pipe Organ Society.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Jane (Dennis) Thomas; a brother, George Thomas (Carolyn) of Plano, TX; nieces Lara Kathleen Ford (Randy) of Dayton, OH and Amanda Lee Thompson of West Lafayette; his step-mother, Catherine Louise Thomas of Daytona Beach, FL; step-brothers, David Lane Mathews (Betty) of Fairbanks, AK and Michael Wayne Mathews of Baltimore, MD; many much-loved cousins.

There will be a “remembrance get-together” at Congregational Christian Church, UCC on Sunday, October 8, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. A brief memorial service will begin at 2:30 p.m. Pastor Rick Alvey will officiate.
