Lela Alice Shroyer Herr of Richmond, Indiana, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, November 6, 2017 at age 97. Lela was born in Millgrove, Indiana on April 10, 1920 to Russell and Mary (Orndorff) Shroyer. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Sidney (George) Shank, Wayne (June) Shroyer, and Janice (Joel) Wagoner.
Lela graduated from Montpelier High School in 1937 and from Ball State Teachers’ College in 1942. She taught Home Economics at New Lisbon High School and music at Ashland and Millville Schools. She also gave private lessons in her home. Lela served her beloved Lord as church organist and pianist for more than 45 years, and was a member of Locust Grove Church of the Brethren. She served others with hospitality and homemade crescent rolls. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.
Lela was married on June 9, 1945, to Willard Herr of New Lisbon, Indiana. They celebrated 48 years together before his death in August 1993. Lela is survived by her children, Philip (Lee) Herr of McIntosh, AL, Esther (Ben) Mills of New Lisbon, IN, and Nancy (Michael) Ludwig of Indianapolis, IN; by grandchildren Craig Herr, Ann Herr Kendall, Joseph Herr, Benjamin Herr, Allen Mills, Angela Mills Steele, Jackson Ludwig, and Anna Ludwig Webster; and 23 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 11 AM to 1 PM on Thursday, November 9, at Culberson Funeral Home, Hagerstown. Services will follow at 1:00 PM. Burial will be in Brick Cemetery.
