Wayne County emergency personnel responded Wednesday afternoon to a serious crash on Interstate 70 that involved three semi-tractor trailers.
Just before 1 p.m., three semis crashed after westbound traffic was stopped on I-70 at the 138-mile marker because of an earlier crash in Henry County.
A preliminary investigation by Indiana State Police shows a westbound semi pulling a box trailer driven by Ronald Street, 47, of Romulus, Michigan, failed to recognize the stopped traffic ahead and ran into the rear of a trailer and semi driven by Charles Librizzi, 41, of Baxley, Ga.
According to the news release, the impact pushed Librizzi’s semi into the trailer of the semi in front of him, being driven by Patrick Houston, 51, of Picton, Ontario.
Street’s semi came to rest in the median on the barrier cables. A medical helicopter transported Street to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis with serious injuries.
Neither Librizzi nor Houston were injured in the crash.
The crash blocked I-70 blocked for approximately 2 1/2 hours and caused traffic issues for Wayne County communities along U.S. 40 and Indiana 38.
Indiana State Police received assistance at the scene from Dublin EMS, Milton and Cambridge City fire departments, IU Health’s LifeLine and Wayne County Sheriff’s Department.
