A man has died after his vehicle vaulted over an Interstate 70 embankment in Wayne County and caught fire.

Shortly before 11 p.m. April 19, Wayne County Sheriff’s Office responded to initial reports of a vehicle fire on Round Barn Road near the I-70 overpass.

Richmond Fire Department and Richmond Police Department units arrived and extinguished the fire.

An investigation revealed that a silver 2020 Chevrolet Equinox driven by James Cotner, 44, of New Castle, was traveling westbound on I-70 and, for an unknown reason, left the roadway driving into the median.

Cotner’s sport utility vehicle vaulted over an embankment going airborne across Round Barn Road before colliding with the opposing bridge embankment. The vehicle caught fire following the collision, Retter said.

Cotner, the vehicle’s sole occupant, was found dead at the scene.

Additional investigation into the incident is being conducted.

Retter also thanked members of Wayne County Emergency Communications Department and Centerville Fire Department who responded to what he called an unfortunate motor vehicle crash.
