Obituaries - Melvin R. Harmeyer

PERSHING, IND. – Melvin R. Harmeyer, 79, of Pershing passed away Tuesday evening, October 10, 2017, at Reid Hospital, following a brief illness.

One of six children born to Edward and Matilda “Tillie” Laker Harmeyer on March 3, 1938, in Batesville, Indiana.
He attended St. Gabriel School and was a 1956 graduate of Milton High School.

On May 17, 1958 he married Gale Smith at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Connersville, Indiana.

During his last year of high school he had been employed at Stant Manufacturing in Connersville working nights and attending school during the day; for 34 years he had been employed at MEG in Cambridge City, Indiana in the maintenance department; at the first filling station when Interstate 70 came through Cambridge City; he worked at Reid Hospital in the security department retiring in 2005 after 16 years of service and had recently helped his son at Harmeyer Auction and Appraisal in Rushville, Indiana. He had been the Town Marshal in Pershing, Indiana.
In his leisure he enjoyed gardening, feeding his birds and squirrels but found the most enjoyment in spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Gale Harmeyer; his son, Russell “Rusty” Harmeyer and his wife, Judy of Richmond, Indiana; his daughter, Ronda Estes and her husband Bruce of Fountain City, Indiana; three grandchildren: Natalie Klotz and her husband, Kevin of Richmond, Indiana, Hunter Estes and (Katlyn Mathews) of Cambridge City, Indiana and Jessica Estes ( Brian Vasquez) of Fountain City, Indiana; three great grandchildren: Riggin, Hayze and Stockton Klotz; two sisters, Marilyn Schunk and Evelyn Klein both of Milton, Indiana; a brother, Floyd Harmeyer and his wife Janet of Milton, Indiana; a sister-in-law, Donna Schaefer and her husband Gary of Cambridge City, Indiana; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Kenny and Roy Harmeyer; two brother-in laws: David Keith Schunk and James Klein; his mother- and father-in-law, Margaret and Conley Smith

Private funeral service will be held on Tuesday with burial to follow in Riverside Cemetery, Cambridge City, Indiana.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to H.E.L.P the Animals shelter; any no-kill animal shelter or Wayne County 4-H.
