Greenville, Ohio – Merrill Guy “Pete” Ewing, 95, resident of Greenville, Ohio, and longtime resident of Daleville, Ind., passed away on Sunday morning in Greenville, Ohio. He was born in Carthage, Indiana, July 22, 1923, the son of John Guy Ewing and Chola Maude Brookhart Ewing.
He worked for many years for Stoops and was a graduate of Carthage High School.
He was a member of the Daleville American Legion, Merrill’s Marauders, and was baptized at the Carthage Christian Church.
During World War II, he was in the 5307th (Merrill’s Marauders) during the battle of Myitkyina Burma. He soon became a mule skinner in 475th infantry. He spend two years in the CBI campaign. (China, Burma and India). He received the Asia Pacific Theatre ribbon with 4 bronze stars and distinguished unit medal. He was discharged with the rank of corporal.
He was preceded in death by his wife Eunice (Brookshire) in 2005, his parents, 1 brother, and 2 sisters.
Survivors include 3 children: Julie Delay (Dale) of Centerville, John William Ewing (Cindy) of Avon and Joni Louise Newman (Duane) of Greenville, 4 grandchildren: Dale Delay II, Michael Ewing, Justin Bronnenberg, and Joshua Bronnenberg (Katie), 3 great grandchildren: Gracie and Wyatt Delay and Neave Bronnenberg.
Services will be held on Friday at 11:00 am at Ballard and Sons Funeral Home, 118 South 5th Middletown with Stacy and Bob Ball officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown.
Friends may call on Thursday from 4-8 PM at the funeral home in Middletown.. Memorials may be made to the Muncie Mission or the Salvation Army.
