TRAVERSE CITY – Michael L. McGuire, beloved by family, friends, and colleagues alike, passed away peacefully at the Munson Hospice House on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at the age of 67. Mike’s loving wife, Nancy, cared for him throughout his battle with cancer.
Mike was a 1968 graduate of Centerville High School and a graduate of Indiana University in Bloomington, IN.
Mike served the Traverse City Area through 35 years of service at the Traverse Area District Library, retiring in 2009. He was well-respected and initiated great growth in the local library, including a move to the current location on Woodmere. In 2005 – 2006, he also served as President of the Michigan Library Association. Mike had an extensive book collection and was a member of the Miniature Book Society. He enjoyed gardening, watching old movies, collecting stamps and coins, and playing trumpet, French horn, and the piano. He also loved to travel and among his favorite trips was an adventure to Ireland with Nancy.
In addition to his wife, Nancy, Mike is survived by three children; son, Matthew McGuire; son, Daniel McGuire and his wife, Cheryl; and daughter, Erin McGuire. Mike was especially proud of his two wonderful grandchildren, Franklin and Calvin. Brother Tom (Donna) McGuire, sister Nancy (Bruce) Johnson Jr., sister-in-laws Karen (Paul) Saleba, Cheryl (Eric) Brown, nieces and nephews. Mike was preceded in death by his parents Don A. and Shirley A. McGuire of Centerville, IN.
The family invites you to a visitation honoring Mike’s life on Monday, February 26, 2018 at the Traverse Area District Library from 4:00 – 7:00 pm.
