This picture was taken of Ernie Pyle in Fall 1944 when he was modeling for a bust by Jo Davidson. Several copies exist. One of them can be found in on the Indiana University Bloomington campus.

Monday, Aug. 3 is the birthday of Hoosier World War II correspondent Ernie Pyle. He was born in 1900, so this would be the 120th anniversary of his birth.

To mark the occasion, the Erie Pyle Legacy Foundation has created a tribute video in partnership with The Media School at Indiana University, Pyle’s alma mater.

The Legacy Foundation shares the same mission as the Friends of Ernie Pyle Development Foundation, which seeks to preserve the legacy of Indiana’s son, considered the greatest World War II correspondent. The Friends of Ernie Pyle operate the Ernie Pyle World War II Museum in Dana, Indiana, which is his birthplace.

Each year, the Ernie Pyle Legacy Foundation celebrates National Ernie Pyle Day on Aug. 3 to honor his outstanding achievements and expertise in journalism.
