Norman Oakes Sr., 85, of Dublin, passed away at his residence Sunday evening, July 8, 2018 surrounded by his family. Norman was born March 20, 1933 in Stanford, Kentucky to the late James and Cora (Judd) Oakes. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Norman was stationed in Germany as a heavy vehicle operator, part of Tank Company- 12th Infantry Regiment. Norman moved to Indiana when he was 16 years old and has made his home in Dublin for the past 52 years. He had worked for Chore Boy and retired from Philco -Ford/Visteon in 1996 after 29 years of service. In his leisure, Norman enjoyed fishing, coon hunting, camping and spending time with his grandkids.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, the former Susie Mae Hyre. They were married in Richmond in January of 1956; ; 5 children, Frank, Carl, and Doug (Lisa) Oakes, Laura (Jeff) Arnold and Janet (Mike) Suttles; 7 grandchildren, Frankie Oakes, Matthew (Ann) Oakes, Adam Oakes, Brandon Suttles, Dylan Arnold, Ethan Oakes, and Courtney Arnold; several great-grandchildren; 1 brother, Howard Oakes, of Albany.
He is preceded in death by 9 brothers and 1 sister.
Funeral services will at 10 a.m. on Thursday July 12, 2018 at Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, Dublin. Rev. Ryan Phelps will officiate. Burial with military honors conducted by contingents of the United States Army Honor Guard and Lawrence H. Bertsch American Legion Post 169 will follow at South Lawn Cemetery in Dublin. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday July 11th.
