Paul E. Smith, 85, of New Castle passed away Friday, January 19, 2018 at Hancock Regional Hospital.
He was born December 11, 1932 in Byrdstown, TN to the late Coy and Mallie (Claborn) Smith.
He retired from Indiana Gas (Vectren Co.) in 1990 after 31 years of service. Paul was a beekeeper in Rush Co. for 55 years. He was a member of the Church of Christ. A man of God, it was his life’s mission to make sure others were prepared to meet God. Paul’s wish was for others to realize the brevity of life and that our lives are only a vapor. He loved working, studying, bees, gardening, and especially loved his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Sue C. (Hamm) Smith, 5 children, Max Smith of New Castle, Debra Rutledge of New Castle, Brenda Cooper of Brownstown, Douglas Smith of Rushville, and Jim (Connie) Smith of Spiceland; 12 grandchildren, Lisa Butler, Ryan Smith, Danny Smith, Aimee Henard, Benjamin Penn, Suzanne Bolte, Julie Skaggs, Rashell Smith, Joshua Smith, Shawna Swincher, Kerri Neal, and Kile Smith; 18 great-grandchildren, siblings, JD and AC Smith both of New Castle, Glen (Willodean) Smith of Mays, Clifford (Irene) Smith of New Castle, and Shirley Williams of New Castle; numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a son, Tony Smith and daughter- in-law, J. Denise Smith.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Preacher Phil Morgan officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 – 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 23 at the funeral home.
