CENTERVILLE – Paul Monroe Chew, 86, passed away Wednesday morning Dec. 26, 2018, at Reid Health in Richmond, Indiana.
A son of the late Ira Monroe and Pearl Esther (Lewman) Chew, Paul was born in Henry County, Indiana, on Oct. 27, 1932.
A lifelong resident of the New Lisbon/Henry County area, Paul has lived in Centerville for the past 2 years. He was a graduate of New Lisbon High School with the class of 1950.
His memberships include Centerville Christian Church, New Lisbon Lions Club and New Lisbon Fire Department. He enjoyed old cars and was a 50-year member of MARC – Model A Restorers Club of Fountain City and a 10-year member of the Richmond Model T Club. Paul looked forward to the many car trips he participated in with club members.
Paul and his wife Alice liked to travel and have visited all 50 states. In his leisure, Paul enjoyed restoring Allis Chalmers tractors, old fire trucks and cars.
Paul worked hard his entire life as owner/operator of Chew’s Excavating Service, school bus driver for the Straughn/ New Lisbon communities and a fuel truck driver for Phillips 66.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, the former Alice Jean Austin. They were married at the New Lisbon Christian Church on Nov. 22, 1978. Children, Kathy (Mike) Miller, David (Nancy) Chew, Richard (Joyce) Chew, Paul D. (Candi) Chew, Rob and Richard Carroll; grandchildren, Clay (Malia) Miller, Amy (Pat) Mummert, Kara (Marty) Strother, Stacy (David) Corwin, Aaron (Leaa) Chew, Emily Chew, Andy McClain, Darrell (Melissa) Chew, Daniel (Danielle) Chew, Dana Chew, Duane (special friend, Anna) Chew, Derek Chew, Jacob (Kim) Disbro, Chad Carroll, Chris Carroll, Matt (Emily) Carroll; 25 great-grandchildren; 1 brother, Raymond Chew; nieces and nephews.
Paul was preceded in death by his first wife, Iris (Shutz) Chew; daughter, Carolyn McClain; granddaughter, Amanda Chew; brother, John Chew; sisters, Ruth Reynolds, Ruby Linginfelter and Gladys Lee.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31, at Centerville Christian Church. The Reverends Wes Sewell and Terry Cochran will officiate. Burial will follow at New Lisbon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30 at Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, Dublin.
