Raymond Marcus Worden, “Modoc”, was born November 25, 1947 in Muncie, IN to the late Raymond and Wanda (Cooper) Worden. Mark ‘Modoc’ Worden ,70, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Hagerstown on the morning of September 7th. ‘Modoc’ was a 1966 graduate of Union High School in Modoc, IN.
He served his country with honor in Vietnam and abroad as an enlisted volunteer in the United States Marine Corp. He was a Khe Sanh veteran seeing action in the hills and mountains surrounding the base. In 2007 ‘Modoc’ retired from General Motors Corp. after 30 years of service. After retirement ‘Modoc’ went on to work at Autocar before being diagnosed with a serious form of cancer for which he was successfully treated. At the time of his passing he was employed as a groundskeeper at Hartley Hills Country Club.
‘Modoc’ was an avid golfer and up until recently a devoted Harley Davidson rider. He enjoyed spending time with friends at the golf course, American Legion Post 333, and AmVets Post 38.
‘Modoc’ was a devoted husband, beloved father, grandfather, and brother. Survivors include his wife of 34 years Cynthia L. (Kerney) Worden, three children Amanda J. Worden (Brad Thomas) of Hagerstown, Bryan A. Worden of Muncie, and Justus T. (Kimberly) Kerney of Economy. His surviving brother and sisters include Teddy (Jim) Holwager of Mathews, NC, Cathy Flatter of Winchester, IN, Joy Woolf of Farmland, IN, Gilbert Worden (Toni Pardue) of Tulsa, OK, and Claudia (Rodney) Spurlock of New Castle, IN. His grandchildren include Cameron Worden, Kelsey Dodd, Shelby Dodd, Bryce Worden along with a great granddaughter, Emma Worden and step-grandchildren and great grandson: Allyson (Gruell) (Brett) Crawford, Patrick Gruell, and Paxton Crawford.
Numerous nieces and nephews and other close relatives will also miss ‘Modoc’ dearly.
Although very active he greatly loved his family and always made time to spend with them. He was very well known throughout the community having countless friends and acquaintances. ‘Modoc’ will be fondly remembered as a very kind, genuine man with a great sense of humor and authentic character. As his nickname can attest, he was fond of his personal slogan: “Bottle of pop, big banana, I’m from MODOC INDIANA!” We will miss you and are grateful we had you.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday Sept. 13th at 2:00pm at Culberson Funeral Home in Hagerstown, IN. Visitation will begin at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to a veteran’s organization of your choice.
