Robert Jackson Owens, 90, of Noblesville, formerly of Hagerstown, went to be with the Lord November 9, 2018. He was born June 29, 1928 to Cecil and Ruby Jackson Owens in Farmland, IN. Bob was a 1946 graduate of Farmland High School. He played in the Randolph County sectional championship his senior year. He was a member of the all-sectional and Muncie regional teams and the Lion’s Club Silver Anniversary District basketball team. Bob graduated from Indiana University in 1951, then moved to Hagerstown where he joined his father in the insurance, finance and real estate business. They celebrated 50 years of service in 2001.
Bob was a member of the Hagerstown Congregational Christian Church for more than 50 years, where he served as Moderator and Treasurer. He also served as church camp counselor at Merom Institute for 5 years. Bob became the first treasurer of the Nettle Creek Players and remained active with the Players during their tenure in Hagerstown. He served two terms on the Hagerstown School Board as well as the Town Board. He also was involved and served in his community on the Park Board, Advisory Board, the Little League Board, and was treasurer of the Tiger Boosters. Bob was a long-time member of the Hagerstown Lions Club and served two terms as president. Other memberships include the Hagerstown Rotary Club, Masonic Lodge, Western Wayne Gideons and the Richmond Area Emmaus Community.
Bob was an avid sports fan, especially the Cincinnati Reds and the Indiana Hoosiers. He coached Hagerstown Little League and Colt baseball teams. Bob knew no stranger and would talk to everyone. His legacy lives on as he will be greatly missed.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Beachler and brother-in-law, Paul Beachler.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Mary Carolyn Ewbank Owens; sons, Dave (Mary) Owens and Mike (Mika) Owens; grandsons, Jake and Drew Owens; nephews, Rob (Susan) Beachler and Phil (Jan) Beachler and grand-nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will gather on Thursday, November 15, 2018 at 12 pm in the Hagerstown Congregational Christian Church, where the funeral service will begin at 1 pm. Burial will follow in Brick Church cemetery.
