Roy Lee Shockney, age 80, of Richmond, Indiana passed away peacefully at home on July 18, 2021 after a 30-year battle with cancer.

Roy was born near Winchester, Indiana on February 25, 1941 to Vernon and Helen Baldwin Shockney. He was a 1959 graduate of Williamsburg High School. On May 30, 1963 he married Rene Conner and they were blessed with one son and one daughter.

Roy had retired from Perfect Circle of Hagerstown along with several members of his family who had spent their entire careers at the company. While he worked in a factory during the day, he also farmed in the evenings and weekends for many years. He was a life-long resident of eastern Indiana where his ancestors first settled prior to Indiana’s statehood. Roy never lived in another area of the world, but he did travel after retirement. He and his long-time friend Charlie Conway saw thousands of miles together delivering livestock, when they weren’t chasing down the occasional attempted escape. He had a deep pride and love of family. No request for help was ever an inconvenience. As the oldest of seven children, he was more than a brother. He was loved and will be missed.

Roy is survived by Rene Shockney; son, Vince (Ronda) Shockney; daughter, Connie (Dave) Davis; grandchildren, Caitlyn (John) Ferguson, Nicholas “Nick” (Jordy) Davis, Sam Shockney, Max Shockney, and step-granddaughter, Evva (Robin) Verhasselt; four step-great-grandchildren; one great-grandson with more on the way. Surviving siblings are Annie Shockney, Larry (Diane) Shockney, and Kathy (Bill) Ketron, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Two brothers, Virgil (Pat) Shockney and Gary (Belinda) Shockney, preceded him in death, as did one sister, Dorothy (Jon) Detweiler.

There will be a graveside ceremony at Willow Grove Cemetery in Fountain City beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 22. Everyone is welcome to join the family as we celebrate Roy’s life.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, please contribute to the American Cancer Society, 5635 West 96th Street, Suite 100, Indianapolis, IN 46278.
