Rufus Earl Hayes, age 79, of Centerville, Indiana, died Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at Reid Health.
Born November 18, 1938, in Jackson, Kentucky, to Lacy and Katherine Johnson Hayes, Earl lived in Wayne County most of his life. He owned the former Hayes House restaurant in Fountain City, Indiana, during the 70s and delivered The Cincinnati Enquirer for years throughout Wayne County. Earl worked at Kemper Cabinets, retiring after many years of service. He had attended Faith Baptist Church and was a member of Abington Christian Church. Earl enjoyed whittling, woodworking, and watching the Reds.
Survivors include his sons, Eddie (Rachel Miller) Hayes of Richmond, Indiana, Daniel (Teresa) Hayes of Tennessee, and Donald Hayes of Kentucky; grandchildren, Kassie Snyder of Liberty, Indiana, Kristy and Tyler Hayes, both of Centerville, Indiana, Ryan Hayes of Richmond, Ethan Hayes and Jessica (Joshua) Kelly, both of Virginia, and Alex Hayes and Nick (Destiny) Hayes, both of Kentucky; ten great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; cousins; and many friends, including Sheila and John Iverson of Centerville, Indiana.
He was preceded in death by his wife of almost 60 years, Callie Reece Hayes, who died on February 24, 2017; parents; sisters, Carmie Johnson, Ann Burnett, Dorothy Pfoutz, and Elizabeth Parker; and brothers, Raymond, Billy, and Sheldon Hayes.
Visitation for Rufus Earl Hayes will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 15, 2018, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 16, 2018, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home with Pastor Josh Kelly and Rev. Bud Parrish officiating. Burial will be in Abington Cemetery.
