Thelma Lee Bicknell, 94, of Hagerstown, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, March 6, 2021.

She was born in New Castle on November 24, 1926, the second of 10 children, to Clarence and Hazel (Ritchie) Garvin and was a life long resident of the Hagerstown area. On June 11, 1945 she married James Leonard “Catfish” Bicknell, and he survives. They would have celebrated their 76th anniversary this year. Together, they raised 5 children in the same house they remain in today. Thelma was a member of New Testament Church of Christ. Her love of the Lord and her family were the greatest joys of her life. Thelma was a homemaker, and, along with her husband, owned and operated Bicknell Oil Company for many years. They were actively involved with Meals on Wheels for 35 years. Following retirement from the family business and after a 6 week trip to Alaska, they returned home and continued to watch their family grow. Thelma enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and watching their many activities. She will be sadly missed by her family and many friends.

In addition to her husband, survivors include 5 children, Christy Lundy (Marvin), Kathy Walter (Ross), Michael Bicknell (Brenda), Jacqueline Daffron (Gary) and David Bicknell (Becky); 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandson; 4 sisters, Margaret Berrier, Florence Arthur, Martha Taylor and Doris Warvel; a brother-in-law, Lewis Bicknell; 2 sisters-in-law, Judy Garvin and Geraldine St. Clair; many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by 4 sisters, a brother, a son-in-law and a daughter-in-law.

Graveside memorial services in Brick Cemetery will be announced in the near future.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Nettle Creek Food Pantry, c/o New Testament Church of Christ, 752 W. Main St., Hagerstown or to Nettle Creek Senior Center.
