Sixth-graders play Centerville, Seton, Hagerstown
Western Wayne sixth-grade boys lost a hard-fought game to Centerville, 29-18.
Scoring for the Eagles were Evan Stuckey popping in 10 points. Jack Patton, Oliver Webb, Aiden Munchel and Leo Russell all helped the cause with two points each. The Eagles’ defensive effort was led by Carson Hawk and Jordan Roberts.
“Leo Russell was outstanding on the glass,” Coach Allen Wade said.
Eagles fall to Seton in OT
The sixth-grade Eagles boys lost a heartbreaker to Seton 50-49 in overtime.
Scoring for the Eagles was Oliver Webb knocking in 22 points. Evan Stuckey added 12 points. Briar Gelespie added 8 points. Leo Russell connected for 7 points.
“The entire team played very well and this was one of the best games the team has played all year,” Wade said.
Carson Hawk and Jack Patton were outstanding on defense. Brady Bishop and Sam Bogue rebounded very well.
Hagerstown wins by 19
The Golden Eagle sixth- grade boys’ team fell to Hagerstown by the score of 35-16.
Leading the offensive attack for the Eagles was Evan Stuckey popping in 10 points. Oliver Webb chipped in 6 points.
Union County Invitational
The sixth-grade Golden Eagles played in the Union County Invitational.
In game one, they defeated Union County 19 -17.
The Eagles’ offense was led by Evan Stuckey and Oliver Webb, each tossing in five points. Leo Russell added 4 points.
Carson Hawk and Clayton Vickers rounded out the scoring with 2 points.
The Eagle defense was outstanding, led by Carson Hawk and Jack Patton. Leading rebounders were Leo Russell, Clayton Vickers and Brady Bishop.
In the championship game, the Eagles fell to Centerville 43 -19.
“The team played hard all game, but we just could not hit our shots,” Wade said. Leading the offensive attack was Oliver Webb, pouring in 11 points. Evan Stuckey connected for 5 points. Briar Gilespie added two points. Leo Russell rounded out the scoring with one point.
Playing well on the defensive end were Jordan Roberts and Will Cameron. Those rebounding well were Leo Russell and Sam Bogue.
E. Hancock wins by 4
Lincoln’s Golden Eagle sixth-grade boys’ basketball team also lost a heartbreaker to Eastern Hancock, 35-31.
Leading the Golden Eagles’ offensive attack was Evan Stuckey, pouring in 14 points. Oliver Webb added 13 points. Anden Munchel chipped in 3 points and Briar Gilespie rounded out the scoring with 1 point.
“The entire team played very good defense with Carson Hawk and Clayton Vickers leading the charge,” Wade said.
Fifth-graders fall
to Bulldogs in tourney
Golden Eagle fifth-graders picked up an opening-game win in the Union County Invitational, defeating Union County 28-24.
“They had the size advantage, but the boys battled and won the rebounds 30-28,” Coach Smith said.
The Eagles started slow, but Cayden Smith hit a 3 at the first-quarter buzzer for an 8-6 lead.
The Eagles built on the lead and went into halftime with a 17-12 lead. The third and fourth quarters were hard-fought, but the Eagles were able to maintain the lead the rest of the game.
Dustin Lunsford popped in 9 points, 6 rebounds, 3 blocks and great post defense before fouling out with 4 minutes left.
Cayden Smith helped the cause with 9 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Braxton Dick scored 8 points and added 5 boards and 3 assists, while Greysen Davis scored 2 points and pulled down 7 boards and added 3 steals.
Caden Ripberger pulled down 5 rebounds and Daniel Bogue had 2 boards.
In the championship game, Centerville just had too much depth as 10 different players scored, and the Eagles were defeated 38-8.
Cayden Smith tossed in 3 points, 6 boards and 2 steals, while Braxton Dick added 2 points and 2 boards.
Greysen Davis picked up 2 points and 2 boards as well and Dustin Lunsford pulled down 6 boards and added 1 point.
Eagles fall to Bulldogs
The Golden Eagle fifth grade fell to Centerville in another game by the score of 46-17.
Cayden Smith popped in 11 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals.
Braxton Dick battled for 4 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals and Greysen Davis added 2 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Daniel Bogue contributed 2 rebounds and a steal and Caden Ripberger added a rebound and steal.
Eagles fall by 2 to Royals
The Golden Eagle fifth-grade boys also lost a heartbreaker to Eastern Hancock, 38-36.
“Even though we were smaller, we battled and out rebounded them 23-18,” Coach Kevin Smith said.
The Eagles shot 14-28 from the field and 4-4 from the line as a team.
Dustin Lunsford connected on for three points shots and ended his night with 18 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks.
Greysen Davis battled their big men to score 6 points, and had 7 boards, with 2 assists and 2 steals.
Braxton Dick scored 8 points with 2 assists and 2 steals. Cayden Smith added 6 points, 6 boards, 5 assists and 2 steals.
Caden Ripberger added 2 rebounds and a steal.
Eagles defeat Seton by 7
The fifth grade boys picked up a win defeating Seton by the score of 32-25.
The Eagles were never up by more than 5 the whole game until the last 50 seconds.
The Eagles led 5-2 after an ugly first quarter and 13-11 at halftime.
The third quarter was about like the first where both teams were aggressive on defense and went into the fourth quarter up 16-13.
In the fourth quarter, both offenses woke up and it was back and forth.
Braxton Dick and Greysen Davis each scored early. Cayden Smith hit a layup and a free throw. Dustin Lunsford then scored and got fouled for a 3-point play to put the Eagles up 28-22.
After Seton hit a 3, Smith hit two free throws to push it back to 5. Davis came up with a big steal and Lunsford knocked down two more free throws for the final score.
“We struggled shooting but fought hard for the win,” Smith said.
Lunsford led the Eagles with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Davis added 6 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals. Dick helped the cause with 6 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists while Smith popped in 7 points, 5 boards and 3 steals. It was a great team win!
Hagerstown falls by 6
Fifth-graders picked up an overtime win, defeating Hagerstown by the score of 39-33.
“I could not be more proud of the boys for the way they fought and clawed back in the game,” Smith said.
The Eagles trailed 14-17 at half and then gave up an 8-0 run to fall behind by 11 with just less than 3 minutes left in the third quarter.
Then the Eagles turned up the defensive pressure. Braxton Dick knocked down three straight shots and Greysen Davis hit another to cut the deficit to 23-27 heading to the fourth quarter.
The Eagles got two big baskets from Dustin Lunsford to tie it up early in the fourth quarter.
After Hagerstown scored twice, Cayden Smith hit two free throws and Davis hit a put back to send it to overtime tied at 31.Smith made two buckets and a free throw to start overtime, and Lunsford and Dick hit free throws to finish it off.
Lunsford finished with 12 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. Dick also had 12 points, 4 assists, and 4 boards. Smith added 9 points, 5 assists and 3 steals. Davis chipped in 6 points, 2 steals and led the Eagles in rebounding with 8.
Caden Ripberger chipped in 4 rebounds, 1 steal, and played solid defense and passing.
“I’m so proud that they never quit after being challenged and not having their best early,” Smith said.
